This blog is written by Kevin Broom — a husband, father and writer. My first novel — a murder mystery set in Washington, DC — is coming in serial form on this very site beginning very soon.

The best writing advice I’ve received came from Ernest Hemingway: “The first draft of everything is shit.” I have it written on the white board on my office as a reminder to get it out of my head and onto a page so I can fix what’s wrong. Agonizing over that first draft is pointless because it’s shit and it’s all going to change.

I also create NBA and Washington Wizards material online. Much of it has been here, but now most of Wizards musings will appear at Bullets Forever. Subscribe to my Wizards podcast, #SoWizards with Ben Becker. We may even record a new episode one day.

My freelance writing has appeared at Vice, the Washington Post, RealGM, Sports Illustrated, NBC Sports, and other outlets and publications. In a shocking development, I even have a page on Muckrack.

Here’s what you can expect at The First Draft: Whatever pops into my head when I decide to write. In the past, that’s been pro basketball and the Washington Wizards. With that aspect of my work shifting to Bullets Forever, I’ll use this space to focus more on writing, the writing life, and artistic expression. And probably complaining about Donald Trump and Republicans, which would be totally unnecessary if My Fellow Americans hadn’t decided to vote for comic book villains.
